Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, despite his presidential announcement, has yet to see a significant surge in support, as former President Donald Trump continues to dominate the 2024 Republican primary field, according to the latest Morning Consult survey.
In the weekly survey released on Tuesday, Trump maintained 56 percent support in the potential GOP primary field, leading his closest competitor, DeSantis, by a margin of 34 points with 22 percent support.
It is worth noting that these figures have remained unchanged since last week. While Trump’s lead has decreased from the 43-point advantage he held in mid-May, Morning Consult’s Eli Yokley pointed out that much of that dip occurred before DeSantis officially launched his bid. This week, the survey highlighted that DeSantis’ support has remained stagnant after his campaign announcement.
Former Vice President Mike Pence, who is expected to enter the race this week, experienced a two-point increase, rising from five percent to seven percent in the past week.
Other notable contenders, including former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, Senator Tim Scott (R-SC), and anti-woke businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, all garnered three percent support.
Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who is expected to join the race on Tuesday, both received only one percent support. Trump recently previewed a potential contentious primary battle with Christie, referring to him as “Sloppy Chris Christie.”
The survey also found that DeSantis remains the top choice as the second candidate for Trump supporters, with 47 percent selecting him as their backup. Similarly, 44 percent of DeSantis supporters chose Trump as their second-choice candidate.
Conducted from June 2 to June 4 among 3,545 potential Republican primary voters, the survey has a margin of error of +/-2 percent.
